Interview with Lady B / Intervju sa Lady B

SRB: Tokom prethodnih 20 godina, Lady B (Bruno Gauthier) dete Detroit tehna i Čikago hausa, radio je i izdavao muziku pod okriljem najvećih imena i izdavačkih kuća: F Communications (lejbl Laurent Garnier-a), Boys Noise, The Classic Music Company (Luke Solomon-ov i Derrick Carter-ov lejbl), International DeeJay Gigolo (DJ Hell-ov lejbl), Good Life (Oxia-in i The Hacker-ov lejbl), Citizen Records (Vitalic-ov lejbl) etc.
Usled ljubavi na prvo slušanje između ovog umetnika i beogradske publike, on je izrazio želju da posle toliko godina ponovo nastupi u Srbiji. Pred njegov nastup u Svemirskoj Kafani, ovog vikenda – 15.03., mi smo vam spremili kratak razgovor sa ovo legendom.

ENG: During the last 20 years, Lady B (Bruno Gauthier) child of Detroit techno and Chicago house, has been working and releasing music for the bigest names and labels: F Communications (Laurent Garnier label), Boys Noise, The Classic Music Company (Luke Solomon’s and Derrick Carter’s label), International DeeJay Gigolo (DJ Hell’s label), Good Life (Oxia i The Hacker’s label), Citizen Records (Vitalic’s label) etc. After the first contact betwen this artist and belgrade’s audience some wierd chemistry appeared, so he decidet to play in Serbia after so many years. Just before his appearance in Svemirska Kafana, this weekend – 15.03., we prepared short chat with this legend.

 

SRB: Ćao Bruno, pozdrav iz Srbije. Za početak, možeš li da nam se predstaviš i kažeš nam nešto o tvom radu poslednjih 20 godina i tvog prvog gostovanja u Beogradu…

ENG: Hi Bruno, greetings from Serbia. For the start, can you introduce yourself and tell us something about your work last 20 years and your first time in Belgrade…

SRB: Ćao i hvala na pozivu za intervju. Pa, ne bih želeo previše da dosađujem pričama o sebi tako da je dovoljno reći da je Lady B samo deo mojih projekata. Ja sebe smatram umetnikom ali ne samo kao Techno/House producentom. Nemam neke planove za karijeru i nisam baš za te marketinške stvari koje morate da radite da bi vam karijera bila u vrhuncu. Imam neke periode kada stvaram neke druge stvari osim muzike. Muziku stvaram samo kada imam ideje. Imam A&R kompaniju pod imenom AZURBOOST (www.azurboost.com) na Francuskoj Rivijeri (Jug Francuske, Nica) i pomažem muzička mesta da se razvijaju. Takođe imam i druge muzičke projekte pod drugim pseudonima i pod mojim ličnim imenom Cahokia’s Secret, Bruno Gauthier (www.bruno-gauthier.com / www.cahokiasecret.com). Takođe volim da stvaram i pomažem mlade umetnike. Radio sam sa Musique Moderne (www.musiquemoderne.fr) i Interférences (www.interferencesproductions.fr).

ENG: Hi and thanks for the interview. Well, i don’t want to be boring talking about myself too much so what i can say is that Lady B is just a part of my works. I consider myself as artist but not only as Techno/House producer. I don’t have a carreer plan and i’m really not into all this marketing things you have to do to keep your career on the top. I have some period i make other things than music. I make Music only when i have ideas. I have a A&R company called AZURBOOST (www.azurboost.com) in French Riviera (south of France, Nice) and i help Musical places to grow. I also have other Musical project under other names and under my real name : Cahokia’s Secret, Bruno Gauthier (www.bruno-gauthier.com / www.cahokiasecret.com). I also like to produce young artists. I do it with Musique Moderne (www.musiquemoderne.fr) and Interférences (www.interferencesproductions.fr).

 

SRB: Dolaziš u beograd posle dosta vremena, zašto tolika pauza, i zašto sada – da li možda imaš neki specijalan razlog?

ENG: You are coming to Belgrade after long time, why did you made such a long break, and why now – do you maybe have some special reason?

SRB: Stvar je u tome što ja nemam agenta. Nikada nisam tražio nekog niti su oni kontaktirali mene. Tako da nastupam kad me ljudi pozovu. Mnogo sam nastupao tokom devedesetih i sjajno se provodio. Ali realnost je da ste većinu vremena sami, na aerodromima,u hotelima… A ja ne volim da budem sam dugo…

ENG: The thing is that i don’t have an agent. I never look for one and nobody propose me. So i am playing when people call me. I played a lot during the 90’s and i had great time. But the reality is that you are alone most of the time. On airports, on hotels… And i don’t like to be alone too much…

 

SRB: Ovdašnji stariji rejveri još uvek pričaju o tvom nezaboravnom nastupu na “Enlitement” žurci ovde u Beogradu, da li možemo da očekujemo nešto slično ovoga puta? 

ENG: Older ravers here still talk about your unforgettable performance on “Enlitement” party here in Belgrade, can we expect something similar this time?

SRB: Ja sada imam 40 godina i nisam ista osoba. Sada svi grade umetničku “sliku”. Bilo je zabavno u početku kršiti pravila: puštati underground muziku i nositi otkačene kostime. Underground je stanje uma. Nije odbijanje uspeha, sticanje imena ili osnivanje kompanije. Već  rad na način koji u sebi osećate i jedino tako, bez obzira da li ste uspešni ili ne. Popularnost je realnost dvadesetog veka. Ali nema ukus, nema miris…  

ENG: I’m 40 right now and i’m not the same person. Now everybody is building an artist “image”. It was funny at the beginning to break the rules : playing underground music wearing crazy clothes. Underground is a state of mind. It’s not about refusing success or having a name or building a company. It’s doing things the way you feel and always doing this way, no matter if you are successfull or not. Popularity is really something of the 20th century. It has no flavor, no smell.

 

 

SRB: Jeff Mills je jedom prilikom izjavio za tebe: “Lady B. je zaista sjajan DJ koji poseduje zadivljujucu vestinu mixovanja i podjednako dobar izbor najkvalitetnijeg house, techno i electro zvuka koji se trenutno moze naci na planeti. Njegovi setovi su brilijantna putovanja od disco-house zvuka do funky i minimal techna”. Da li se tvoj pogled na muziku i njen izbor promenio od tada?

ENG: Jeff Mills once said about you “Lady B is really great DJ who possess remarkable mixing skill and inasmuch great choice of the best quality house,techno and electro sounds which can be found at this moment. His sets are briliant journies from disco-house to funky and minimal techno sounds.” Did your view on music and its choice changed since then?

SRB: Ne, i dalje sam isti. Mogu da pustim Frenckie Knuckles-ovu vokalnu traku i 3 trake kasnije Jeff Millsa pa ponovo na oldschool Disko klasike ako osetim da će me publika pratiti.

ENG:No, i’m still the same. I can play a Franckie Knuckles vocal song and 3 records later a Jeff Mills track and return to an oldschool Disco classic if i feel the crowd will follow.

 

SRB: Tvoje mišljenje o elektro sceni danas?

ENG: Your opinion about electro scene today?

 

SRB: Nalazimo se između 2 perioda. Još uvek nismo u 21. veku. Iako su svi priključeni na internet, našim mozgovima treba vremena da se adaptiraju na naš novi način života. Industrijski period je gotov. Elektro scena i cela muzička industrija, koja više neće biti “industrija”, je u potrazi za novim modelom, novim načinom života, zato što je muzika najčistija ljudska interpretacija života: sviraš, možeš pauzirati, premotati napred/nazad, a neki ljudi odluče i da stopiraju.

Već 4 godine radim na produkciji nove generacije muzike. To će biti jedinstven “ekosistem” za muziku, ljubitelje muzike, stvaraoce muzike i korisnike muzike. Nadam se da će sve biti spremno do 2015., ako sve bude išlo kako treba, napravićemo prototip u septembru.   

ENG: We are between 2 period. We are not yet in the 21rst century. Even if everybody is connected to the internet, our brains need time to adapt to what will be our new way of life. Industrial period is over. Electro scene and all the music industry, which will not be an “industry” anymore, is searching for its new model, its new way of life, cause Music is the purest human interpretation of life : you play, you can pause, you can rewind, you can fast foward and some people take the decision to stop. 

Since 4 years, i’m working on a new generation music production and diffusion structure. It will be an unique “ecosystem” for Music, Music Lovers, Music Makers and Music users. I hope it will be ready in 2015, if everything is going right, we will built the prototype in september.

 

SRB: Koja je priča o tvom klubu “Barbarella”, šta je bila tvoja vizija kada si odlučio da otvoriš taj klub?

ENG: Whats the story about your club “Barbarella”, what was your vision when you decided to open that club?

SRB: Otvorio sam ga 1993. Glavni razlog je bio da pokažem da su Techno i House muzika bile kao rock ili pop. Zbog toga je bio restoran/klub, jer ishrana je nešto prirodno što svi praktikuju svakodnevno.

ENG: I opened it in 1993. The main reason was to show that Techno and House Music was music like rock or pop. That’s why it was a restaurant/club because eating is something natural everybody do everyday.

 

SRB: Šta misliš o Beogradu i elektro sceni ovde?

ENG: What do you think about Belgrade and electro scene here in Serbia?

SRB: Srećan sam što je Istočni deo Evrope stvarno aktivan sada. Zahvalite digitalizaciji za ovo, Nije ceo svet na tom levelu. Ne morate biti iz Detroita, Londona ili Berlina da bi izdavali muziku širom sveta i bili poštovani.

ENG: I’m happy that east part of Europe is really active now. Thanks the digital for this. Now the all world is on the same level. You don’t have to be from Detroit, London or Berlin to release Music all over the world and be appriciated.

 

SRB: Dolaziš u klub “Svemirska Kafana”, to je naše posebno malo mesto, smatramo ga Beogradskim Berghain-om, da li znaš nešto o njemu?

ENG: You are coming in club “Svemirska Kafana”, its our special little place, we consider it Belgrade’s Berghain, do you know anythig about it?

SRB: Nisam bio ranije upoznat sa tim mestom ali sam srećan što će se sve desiti na intimnom mestu. Više sam za manja mesta već neko vreme.

ENG: It’s the first time i heard about it but i’m really happy it happens in a intimate place. i’m more into small places since a while.

 

SRB: Neka poruka za tvoje fanove ovde, posebno starije rejvere koji su čekali toliko godina da te slušaju live ponovo…

ENG: Any message for your fans here, especially older ravers who waited so many years to see you live again…

SRB: Još uvek prepričavam priču o Enlitement-u prijateljima i drugim izvođačima. to je jedan od moja top 3 suvenira! Iako sam bio na stejdžu, daleko od ljudi, konekcija sa publikom kroz muziku  je bila tako intenzivna, tako jaka. Osećao sam se kao da mogu da dodirnem ruku svakog čoveka u publici. Ovakvi momenti su stvarnoretki u životu.

ENG: I’m still telling the story of Enlitement to friends and other artist. It’s one of my top 3 best souvenirs ! Even if i was on a stage, far from the people, the connection thru Music with the crowd was so intens, so strong. It was like if i could touch every hand of everyone in the venue. These kind of moments are really rare in a human life.
