Interview with Moonbeam / Intervju sa Moonbeam-om
ENG: Moonbeam is a Russian electronic music project, founded in 2003 by brothers Vitaly and Pavel Khaleev. By writing their own house, techno, trance, dubstep, and minimal techno tracks and remixes, the duo has amassed fans around the world. In 2008 the group released their debut album Storm of Clouds in Russia, followed by the world premiere of the record Consumption. In 2010 Moonbeam was listed in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs at position number 42, becoming the third Russian musician in history to make the list. At the end of March 2010 the group released the studio album Around The World on the Dutch label Black Hole Recordings. They took some time for us! 🙂
SRB: Moonbeam je Ruski elektro projekat, osnovan 2003, od strane braće Vitalija i Pavela Khaleeva. Izdajući sopstvene house, techno, trance, dubstep, i minimal techno tracke duo je oduševio fanove širom sveta. 2008. izdali su svoj debi album Storm of Clouds u Rusiji, praćen svetskom premijerom trake Consumption. 2010. Moonbeam je zauzeo 42. mesto na DJ Magazine-ovoj Top 100 listi, i time postao treći Ruski muzički projekat u istoriji koji je uspeo da se nađe na listi. Krajem marta 2010. duo je izdao studijski album Around the World za Holandski label Black Hole Recordings. Odvojili su malo vremen i za nas! 🙂
ENG: Привéт Vitaly, Pavel 🙂 we are glad you menaged to spare some time for us and thank you for that. For the start one classic queston, what attracted you two to the world of electro music, and what kept you?
SRB: Pozdrav Vitaki, Pavel 🙂 drago nam je što ste uspeli da odvojite malo vremena za nas i hvala vam na tome. Za početak jedno klasično pitanje, šta vas je privuklo svetu elektronske muzike, i šta vas je zadržalou njemu?
ENG: For us music it’s not just a melody, it’s our hobby and job. Music means studio working, parties, meetings, communication. It’s our way of life and we can’t live without it.
SRB: Za nas muzika nije samo melodija, ona nam je i hobi i posao. Muzika je i rad u studiju, žurke, sastanci, komunikacija. Ona je naš način života i ne možemo živeti bez nje.
ENG: You are on the sceene over a decade, how did you started?
SRB: Na sceni ste više od decenije, kako ste počeli?
ENG: Our history is very similar to many other stories of other musicians: one day we just realized that we can be and we want to be a part of EDM scene. Before this, we worked on Russians radio stations and from time to time we have been doing some music experiments. After some time we decided to make it on professional level.
SRB: Naša istorija je jako slična pričama drugih muzičara: jednog dana smojednostavno shvatili da možemo i želimo da budemo deo EDM scene. Pre toga, radili smo na Ruskim radio stanicama i sa vremena na vreme smo vršili neke muzičke eksperimente. Posle nekog vremena smo odlučili da sve to podignemo na profesionalni nivo.
ENG: Here in Serbia its very hard to succeed as a DJ, can you tell us how was it for you in Russia?
SRB: Ovde u Srbiji je jako teško uspeti kao DJ, možete li nam reći kako je bilo vama u Rusiji?
ENG: It was long and hard way. Sooth to say, we are still on this road and now it’s more difficult to become a famous musician, as it was 10 years ago. We spent 3 or 4 years before our first big success.
SRB: Bio je to dug i težak put. Blago rečeno, mi smo još uvek na tom putu i sada je još teže postati poznati muzičar negošto je to bilo pre 10 godina. Trebalo nam je 3,4 godine do prvog većeg uspeha.
ENG: What can you tell us about electro sceene in Russia today?
SRB: Šta nam možete reći o današnjoj elektro sceni u Rusiji?
EBG: Russian electronic scene grows up every year. Every EDM listener from all over the world today can list 5 or 10 Russian musicians at least. And who knows, maybe sometime #1 DJ also will be from Russia. We have all chances 🙂
SRB: Ruska elektro scena raste svake godine. Svaki EDM fan širom sveta danas može nabrojati najmanje 5 do 10 Ruskih muzičara. Ko zna možda nekada #1 DJ takđe bude iz Rusije. imamo šanse 🙂
ENG: It’s hard to define your style, in your tracks/sets you are taking us on a drive betwen trance,progressive house and techno/minimal with your authentic personal touch in every track. Where do you find inspiration, and what’s your philosophy about making music?
SRB: Teško je definisati vaš stil, u svojim trakama/setovima vodite nas na vožnju kroz trance,progressive house and techno/minimal sa vašim autentičnim pečatom u svakoj traci. gde pronalazite inspiraciju, i koja je vaša filozofija u vezi stvaranja muzike?
ENG: We have endured those times when every DJ should pick up one of the styles for his music. Now its styles freedom and you don’t need to limit yourself about what styles you should pick for you bio. This is our music philosophy: do what you want and destroy all borders which you see. Find inspiration in everything, in every breath and every step during your life.
SRB: Preživeli smo ta vremena kada je svaki DJ birao neki žanr za svoju muziku. Sada vlada sloboda stilova i ne morate da se ograničavate sa tim koji ćete stil izabrati za svoju biografiju. Ovo je naša muzička filozofija: Pronađi inspiraciju u svemu, u svakom dahu, na svakom koraku tokom svog života.
ENG: Can you tell us what and when was the moment when you realized that you are going to succeede, maybe your first release for “Black Hole”?
SRB: Možete li nam reći koji i kada je bio momenat kada ste shvatili da ćete uspeti, možda vaše prvo izdanje za “Black Hole”?
ENG: It was 2006 when Tiesto picks up our track ‘See The Difference Inside’ for his ‘ISOS 6’ compilation. That was ‘this’ moment for us.
SRB: To je bilo 2006. kada je Tiesto izabrao našu traku “See The Difference Inside” za njegovu “ISOS 6” kompilaciju. To je bio “TAJ” momenat za nas.
ENG: One question for my own soul 🙂 My favorite track,masterpiece – “Cocoon”, what was your inspiration for this track, how it was created?
SRB: Jedno pitanje za moju dušu 🙂 Moja omiljena traka, remek delo – “Cocoon”, šta je bila vaša inspiracija za ovu traku, kako je nastala?
ENG: The history of this track begins in 2006, when we took part in remix contest organized by Skint label for “Kill 100” track by X-Press 2. Unfortunately, our remix didn’t win and we still don’t know is jury have listened to this track or not. After a year, we were came back to this remix and decide to delete all parts from original tune and vocals and add original moon melody. After those manipulations, Beyorself really fell in love with this track and after some time ‘Cocoon’ was released and have been in Beatport Top100 during 3 month.
SRB: Istorija ove trake počinje 2006., kada smo učestvovali u remix takmičenju organizovanom od strane Skint labela za traku “Kill 100” od X-Press 2. Nažalost naš remix nije pobedio a mi i dalje ne znamo da li je žiri preslušao našu traku ili ne. Posle godinu dana, vratili smo se ovom remixu i odlučili da obrišemo sve delove originalne trake i vokale i dodali originalnu moon melodiju. posle ovih manipulacija Beyourself se zaljubio u ovu traku i posle nekog vremena “Cocoon” je izdat i bio na Beatport Top 100 tri meseca.
ENG: Most people consider you the most influential dance artists in Russia, what do you think about that, is it a heavy burden?
SRB: Dosta ljudi vas smatra najuticajnijim dance izvođačima u Rusiji, šta mislite o tome, da li je to teško breme?
ENG: So many men, so many opinions. We don’t think that we are the most popular in Russia 🙂
SRB: Toliko ljudi, toliko različitih mišljenja. Mi ne smatram sebe najpopularnijim u Rusiji 🙂
ENG: Any DJ/Producent you cooperate the most?
SRB: Neki DJ/Producent sa kojim najviše sarađujete?
ENG: We are good friends with German musician A*S*Y*S. And we are frequent visitors in his studio: we learn new hardware and software synths and plugins here. Also for our ‘The Random’ album we make a few tracks with very talented Andrea Roma from Italy. But anyway, we prefer to work with our vocalists of course.
SRB: Dobri smo prijatelji sa Nemačkim muzičarem A*S*Y*S – om. Česti smo posetioci njegovog studija: učimo nove hardver i softver sintove i plugin-ove tamo. Takođe za naš ‘The Random’ album pravimo nekoliko traka sa veoma talentovanim Andrea Roma-om iz Italije. Bilo kako bilo, prferiramo da radimo sa našim vokalima naravno.
ENG: What can you tell us about your new project “Space Odyssey Mars”?
SRB: Šta nam možete reći o vašem novom projektu “Space Odyssey Mars”?
ENG: We have long planned to release second part of our Space Odyssey, as the main concept of it is to find the musicians from around the world which are close to us by spirit and sound. We have listened a huge number of tracks, which we received during last year. And, fortunately, we found a couple of new tunes by talented newcomers musicians. We always try to support them and helping in their implementation.
SRB: Dugo smo planirali da izdamo drugi deo naše Space Odyssey, pošto je njen glavni koncept da pronađemo muzičare iz celog sveta koji su nam bliski duhom i zvukom. Preslušali smo ogroman broj traka koje smo primili prošle godine. I na sreću, pronašli smo par novih traka od talentovanih mladih muzičara. Uvek pokušavamo da ih podržimo i pomognemo im u implementaciji.
ENG: Did you have any offers from Serbia, any chance we could hear you live soon?
SRB: Da li ste imali neke ponude iz Srbije, ima li šanse da vas čujemo live u skorije vreme?
ENG: Vitaly live in Montenegro, so we hope that this year Serbia will see Moonbeam.
SRB: Vitali živi u Crnoj Gori, tako da se nadamo da će ove godine Srbija videti Moonbeam.
