Intervju sa Octave One :: Interview with Octave One

ENG: Legends of Detroit city brothers Lenny Burden and Lawrence Burden better known to everyone as Octave One are coming for the first time at the Exit Festival and the famous Dance Arena, they were able able to find some time to give us really great answers on our questions.

ENG: The single “I Believe,” which appeared on the compilation Techno: The New Dance Sound of Detroit marked the beginning of what we all know today as Octave One project. Can you tell us something about the events that are related to you before the first release, when was your first interest in production and how did you found yourself in these waters?

ENG: Yes, ‘I Believe” was the first that the public as a whole had the opportunity to hear but we had been working on making grooves for a minute amongst ourselves in Lenny’s apartment where we housed a small studio. We had recorded a jam session with us Jay Denham, Mike Huckaby and Anthony Shakir called Analog Analog Digital ‘AAD’ which we were always treating to release but we just never got around to releasing it. But our inroads into the scene came through Anthony ’Shake’ Shakir, so that’s how we really found ourselves amongst the other techno pioneers in Detroit.

ENG: When you look back at the two decades, you’ve been doing what you love, what stands out for you? (Whether it be a moment in a club or a moment in the studio)

ENG: The biggest thing that stands out for us is when we caught our second generation of Octave One sneaking in our studio making tracks when we left the studio. We know you’re wondering who that second generation of Octave One is, that’s our youngest brothers Lorne and Lance. Our studio was located in the basement of our parent home and they used to come in the studio when we were creating music laying on the floor under the mixing console. We used to be in the studio mixing down songs and we would take a break to finish the following day, so we would tell them not to touch our mixing board, not cause we were trying to be mean but because they were just little kids…they might have been 7 and 10yrs. old. So of course no one listens to there older brothers when there’s some toys they wanted to play with…lol They had been watching us and learned how to play with the gear and even record on Protools, which we found out after we doubled back to the studio and caught them doing it. And they were pretty good too! Now, we all are part of the projects in some way shape or form.

SRB: Vaš peti album “Burn it Down” je konačno izašao, stvarno sjajnih i prelepih 11 traka. Naš favorit je Jazzo/Lose Myself feat. Ann Saunderson, da li vi izdvajate neku?

ENG: Your fifth album “Burn it Down” finally came out, really great and beautiful eleven tracks, our favorite is Jazzo/Lose Myself feat. Ann Saunderson, do you have favorite track?

ENG: For us, each track has a special place in our hearts for different reasons. So it’s something about the complete project as a whole which is our favorite release until the next, of course:)

SRB: Da li ste zadovoljni reakcijom publike na album?

ENG: Are you satisfied how the audience reacted to the album?

SRB: Zapravo jesmo!

ENG: Actually, we are! We couldn’t have been more pleased with there reaction to it, because if it wasn’t for them inquiring about so many of tracks that we recorded for the ‘Boiler Room’ project this album as a whole would not have existed.

ENG: Which musician had the biggest influence on your career?

ENG: We can’t really say for sure, but we can say that we had the opportunity for a few years to be roadies for the great jazz pianist ‘Bob James’ and he truly inspired us to succeed.  It’s something about how he treats people that is so magnetic and welcoming…his fans and even his crew that you all feel that you are part of his team. With all of his accomplishments he’s one of the most humble, warm and genuine people that you will ever meet.

ENG: Can you please tell us the secret of working together for 37 years and not get in fight? 🙂

SRB: Kada saznamo javićemo vam… Lol! 🙂

ENG: When we find out we’ll let you know…Lol! We get into from time to time like all people of passion, but what makes us different is we don’t take to long to ‘kiss and make up’ 🙂

SRB: Koji nastup ćete pamtiti do kraja vaših života, i zašto baš taj?

ENG: Which show will you remember for the rest of your lives and why that one?

ENG: Probably, when we played the Love Parade because it was one of the biggest stages we and other artist had ever been on. And you had never seen as many nervous people backstage as all of us, we all thought we didn’t do as well as we did and were consoling each other as we exited the stage. But hey, artist are human too 🙂

ENG: Since you carry 40+kg of equipment each, when touring, plan on transferring to software in recent future?

ENG: Naw, we always joke about breaking out the software and retiring the gear but its only a joke amongst us. And besides with as much as we do on stage live we would undoubtedly be bored to death without our toys!

ENG: Considering that you’ve been a respected & famous techno act for so long, what do you think of this “EDM era” in music?

ENG: EDM for the most part isn’t really our thing but if it makes you happy and you enjoy it ‘more power to them’! We all have our place in this world and we’re all trying to find a little happiness in it!

SRB: Kako ste uživali u vašem live nastupu u Beogradu, u klubu The Tube, 2013.?

ENG: How did you enjoy your live show in Belgrade, at club The Tube in 2013? We’ve been at that amazing live show and it was great, for you, how it was?

ENG: Of course, it was a fun show for us and we saw that our peeps loved it as much as we did performing for them! If we’re covered in sweat at the end of our set, we had fun!

Neke stare stvari ili nove trake sa  “Burn it Down” albuma?

ENG: What will you take with you from hardware for your live performance at Exit Festival and what can audience expect from you? Some old stuff or new tracks from “Burn it Down” album?

ENG: Well we’re still working on what the gear list will be for sure for the Exit festival, but you can be sure that the ‘Mothership’ will be stocked and fully functioning! It will be a mixture of old, present and even future tracks for the show…we don’t know which tracks for sure yet because that depends on what we feel the crowd can handle which is decided when we press start on the gear. But we’ll make sure that the pulse will be intense!!

ENG: In the end, what are your plans for the future and what would you say to your fans in Serbia who are coming to Exit Dance Arena?

ENG: The future entails us performing our butts off! We have a pretty mad tour schedule in front of us still, but we are looking forward to it. And to our fans in Serbia coming to Exit Dance Arena…prepare to sweat, sweat and sweat some more…you know how we do it and we won’t let you down!
